A left-handed Crooked knife 8 inches with the blade. In Paul-René’s younger years many of the elder men he learned from in New England and Canada used the traditional knife of the woodland peoples for all types of work. These elder men told how important it is to keep this tradition “the only real Indian knife”. They worried it would be forgotten – today few people know about them. They have a small blade set into a handle – originally a beaver tooth. Tamaqua ‘beaver’ taught us how to carve – Paul-René carved this one and decorated it with chip work painted red and green with old mineral paints. A curved blade [hand forged] is attached with wire to the handle. Wire is used for dry work in the woods,  eel skin or later tape used for maritime work. They are worn on the belt when in the woods or canoeing. – but they were . PR is finishing a chapter in his coming book on wahawknegans ‘crooked knives’ and the many stories & words used to talk about them.
