Description
This knife sheath is beaded on brain tan hide (sometimes called suede) and sinew sewn (see pictures). It is antique made in the late 1800s – early 1900s. There is no damage to the white background bead work or design but a bit uneven due to some wear and tear with imperfections, all effects of aging. Beads are opaque 12/0 or 13/0 in size with diamond designs with red in the middle, “greasy” yellow around it, and “Sioux” green on the border, identifying it as Central Plains design. The arrows at the top are unique. Identifying the specific tribe of the maker is difficult, as people traded between communities.
It is sinew sewn (see the close up of the knot in the pictures). It probably had fringe all along the bottom at one time. It is from an old collection and is in great shape for it’s age. The sheath is 10″ long and 3″ across. The brain tan hide is stretched across rawhide, forming a rigid inner protection from knife damage.
The knife may not be antique, but is in great shape, the handle is wrapped with shrunken leather and sewn, it also has brass tacks further securing the leather. The knife is 11″ long with a 5.5″ blade and 7.5″ handle.
