Description

LIMITED EDITION

“Napkin Baskets” were a type, now very collectable, made in a number of sizes but almost always square in shape. This one includes many on the very finely cut rows of narrow wooden ash splints and fine rows of braided sweetgrass. These baskets were once produced a major form of income for the Wabanaki Peoples of New England and other First Nations across NY and Northeastern Canada. They were popular during the Victorian Era of the late 1800’s into the 1940’s. These we have for sale are from the mid- to early 20th c from Maine and/or Eastern Canada. This one is 8″ x 8″ x 1.5″ and is very old. This one is about 100 to 70 years of age [maybe older]. We store them away from direct light to help preserve them. This basket has very little damage except on one side where some broken splints can be seen. Very hard to find examples of all the varieties – this one is very rare and we have only this one. See our other examples of this and other fancy baskets. [See all 8 photos – they have details on condition – you may need to scroll with the arrow to the right]
