Description

Antique ash & sweetgrass  “Napkin Basket” this was a type, now very collectable, made in a number of sizes but almost always square in shape. This one includes many on the very finely cut rows of narrow wooden ash splints and fine rows of braided sweetgrass. These baskets were once produced a major form of income for the Wabanaki Peoples of New England and other First Nations across NY and Northeastern Canada. This one is 7″ x 7″ x 3.75″ but a little bigger if the ash curls are included. This basket was originally red dyed ash splint which can still be seen clearly on the inside but faded on the outside. Fading is normal and helps give an idea of the age of a basket. This one is about 80 to 60 years of age [maybe older]. We store them away from direct light to help preserve them. This basket has very little damage but look closely and some broken splints can be seen. These were popular during the Victorian Era of the late 1800’s into the 1940’s.  These we have for sale are from the mid- to early 20th c from Maine and/or Eastern Canada. Very hard to find examples of all the varieties – collecting examples of all the styles is hard.   See our other examples of this and other fancy baskets.
